Rockingham County, large in area and exceptionally suited to agriculture, has long been the agricultural powerhouse of Virginia, ranking #1 in the state. Poultry processing plants in the area make agriculture the largest employer in the region. According to the USDA Census of Agriculture, between 2002 and 2007, the county lost 73 farms and 15,491 acres (6%) of its farmland.
Rockingham County currently has over 2,600 acres of private land permanently conserved. By contrast, Rockbridge County has over 31,000 acres conserved, much in just the last few years.
