Aldo Leopold “Green Fire” – A Land Ethic for Our Time

October 18 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Augusta County citizens are invited to join Valley Conservation Council for a “Conversation about Land, People and Community” to be held October 18, 2017 at 6:00pm at Augusta County Public Library.  The conversation will revisit the vision of a land ethic first proposed by the legendary Aldo Leopold in a small collection of essays,A Sand County Almanac, which has become a classic in Western literature and the inspiration for generations of readers.

The program will begin with the award winning PBS film, A Green Fire, tracing Leopold’s life (1887 – 1948) and legacy. ”There are two things that interest me,” wrote Leopold, “the relationship of people to each other and the relationship of people to land.” Trained as a forester, he began his career in 1909 in the newly established U.S. Forest Service in Arizona and New Mexico, where he was instrumental in the creation of the first nationally designated wilderness area.  Leopold’s pioneer teaching in the field of wildlife ecology and management at the University of Wisconsin led him and his family in 1935 to begin restoring a worn out farm on the Wisconsin River in Sand County.  A Sand County Almanac recounts those efforts.

The film will be followed by community members, including reading excerpts from the book and engaging the audience in a discussion to explore how the enduring relevance of Leopold’s message can bring people together to  better understand their individual and collective land use choices, why we should care, and how a land ethic evolves in a thinking community.

Refreshments will follow.
