Maya Hawthorn Gunderson
Maya Hawthorn Gunderson has been with VCC since 2020 as their Director of Operations. She moved to the Valley in 2002 where she received a BA in English Literature from James Madison University. She apprenticed in midwifery in Louisville, KY for five years before returning to Harrisonburg to work as a licensed midwife. She traveled all over the Valley caring for birthing families and fell in love with the small towns, farmland, and mountains that make up this beautiful region. During that time, Maya served on the Midwifery Advisory Board to the State Board of Medicine, and as both Secretary and then Treasurer of the Virginia Midwives Alliance.
In 2017, desiring more time with her family, Maya made the switch to office administration. She joined the Natural Garden – an ecological landscaping company that specializes in native plants and pollinator-friendly landscaping. Maya is passionate about the environment and is overjoyed to continue her career in the ecological field supporting the conservation and restoration work that VCC engages in.
When she’s not working in the office, Maya loves birdwatching, gardening, and making herbal medicines from homegrown plants. She currently lives in Staunton with her husband Paul and her three daughters, where they spend lots of time exploring the forests and rivers of the surrounding countryside.
